Andy Hockley's Home

About me
I live in Micronesia ("Micronesia?" I hear you cry, "Isn't that what happens when your hard drive crashes and you lose all your files?" - this is a very clever play on words... so think about it. Don't just read on you ingrate. Having pondered and understood my highly amusing little pun, you may permit yourself a little chuckle, and move on...) Anyway, my actual home is on the island of Pohnpei, in the Federated States of Micronesia. For those interested enough to look at a map, you are looking for a speck about midway between Hawaii and the Phillipines. It's very small. I work for the College of Micronesia as a CALL/Software Specialist. (CALL stands for Computer Asssisted Language Learning). This essentially means I am responsible for buying, evaluating, and training teachers to use software for use in the Language and Literature Faculty of the College. I am, despite my exotic locale, British, and was born a few months before England won the World Cup. As far as I know I am one of only two English men on the island, so nostalgic conversations about British TV programmes of the seventies, and discussions about the chances of Sheffield Wednesday are unsurprisingly a little limited. Still that's not necessarily a bad thing :)
What I'm interested in:
  • Computers in education
The use of computers in college level education - particularly in language - is not only my job, but also a great interest of mine. I am in touch with various members of the US academic community who are using computers in teaching writing. I'd like to meet similar people in Britain and across the world.
  • Writing
I like to think of myself as a writer (although I am as yet unpublished) - particularly as a travel writer. I have been travelling and living around the world now for 10 years and am beginning to write articles about some of my trips and homes.
  • Sheffield Wednesday
English football's sleeping giant. (Or possibly sleeping tall person... average height?... well sleeping anyway... that we can agree on.) A good season has just passed in which the Owls began to stir from their slumbers (I might as well flog this metaphor to death). A good team is forming around the likes of Benito Carbone and Des Walker. Here's to the championship in 1998.
